Why you should support independent reading!

Research indicates that students should engage in independent reading at least 20 minutes every day. Here are a few quotes from research:
Reading is a prime source of word exposure, particularly for complex and low-frequency words, and there is evidence from research that the amount of time spent reading is closely associated with word learning—a relationship that holds during childhood and adulthood. This suggests that reading should be promoted, not only as a school-based activity, but as a leisure-time activity as well (Nippold 2005).
When students engage in voluntary reading about topics that truly interest them, their effort, motivation, and attitude about reading improve (Nippold 2005).
The National Research Center on the Gifted and Talented designed a study to examine the belief that an increase in the amount of time spent independently reading self-selected, appropriately challenging books would positively affect student achievement (Reiss 2008).
