Summer Reading!
At Oklahoma Virtual Academy and Insight of Oklahoma, we believe in putting literacy first. Through our summer reading initiative, students will increase reading comprehension and skills while discovering a love for reading.
What is the goal of the initiative?
The goal of this initiative is to get students reading for 20 minutes each day during the summer months. The “summer slide” refers to the decrease in reading skills over the summer months. Fight summer slide by actively reading books that you will enjoy. When you practice reading you build vocabulary and improve reading comprehension.
How do I participate in the initiative?
You can participate simply by reading a book that you enjoy for 20 minutes each day. Parents can help students participate by signing them up for a summer reading program at a local library or by using the Bison Reading Site to find free books online: https://hwyers.wixsite.com/bisonreading After you have completed your reading each week, complete the reading log on the Bison Reading site. You will receive an email certificate at the end of the summer for participating.
What if my student is struggling with reading and needs intensive support to increase reading comprehension before next school year?
Teachers can help students and parents find resources that are best for them; however, there are programs that are in place to help and support struggling readers:
